The Suffragents: How Women Used Men to Get the Vote

By Brooke Kroeger (Albany, NY: SUNY Press, 2017)

Beginning in 1909, the cause of woman’s suffrage had an often overlooked ally in the Men’s League for Woman Suffrage. Mdae up of an inaugural group of 150 men from divergent fields and vocations, the so-called “Suffragents” grew steadily in number and voice up to 1917, when New York granted voting rights to women. Kroeger relies on a comprehensive bibliography of sources on woman’s suffrage to credit these men without diminishing the lead role that women played in establishing the movement and directing the energy of supporters to maximize impact.
